Small Whole Cloth Quilt

I bought this pre-printed Batik whole cloth quilt top a few years ago (I think 2007 Nashville quilt show) from The Stencil Company.  I finally got around to hand quilting it.  The quilt pattern is Queen’s crown.  Finished, it measures 16 in square.  The quilting is difficult to see in my photos of the front.  Here is the full quilt.

I now need to add a sleeve for hanging and a label.

Rooster Quilt

This miniature quilt is made using a feed sack which held rice.  The rooster logo is framed by a black and then a red/black sash.  The quilt measures 10.5 in X 12.75 in.  It is machine pieced.  It is machine and hand quilted.

This photo shows the rooster and quilting better.  The rooster is quilted with cross-hatching while the outer area is an intertwined cable.  These were hand quilted.  The area next to the black strip was machine quilted “in-the-ditch.”
The back has a sleeve for hanging.

Under the Tree

The batik used in the center of this quilt was a lone square of fabric which I didn’t want to cut up.  I felt lucky that it had the nice scene featured.  I noticed I had just enough of the border print I used for the inner frame.

The quilt is machine pieced and quilted.  It measures  9 7/8 in X 9 5/8 in. 

Here you can see how I used dark green thread to make the metallic tree and figures stand out even more.
The outer border fabric is a black print which looks gray/black but photographs blue/black.
The back has a sleeve for hanging.

AAQI Donation Quilt -- Let's Go

Two years ago I made a quilt for the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI).  This is my second quilt for them.

It is machine appliqued and quilted.  The center “heart” fabric is from a silk tie who’s theme was in the guise of “Where’s Waldo?” but involved Santa.  The confusion and fun inspired me to make this small quilt I call “Let’s Go.”  Let’s go on a trip and make some memories. 

I cut out the road signs and the red car from some Route 66 fabric had I used for a previous quilt.

Here is Santa in the middle of the zoo.

The quilt is 9 in X 11.5 in.  I used the fast triangles method for hanging.

I have registered and mailed the quilt.  It is not up for sale or auction on the site yet, but will be in the future as quilt #7034.  

Yellow Flower

This small art quilt was inspired by a photo of a multinodular goiter in a JAMA article (photo credit), the upper right image here.

I took the photo and enlarged it more than 400% to create this template on freezer paper.  I applied light-weight fusible web to the back of my black fabric and the freezer paper to the front.  Then using an #11 blade I cut out the design.

The black fabric was then fused to the background fabrics.  First the yellow print and then the gray print.  The raw edges were then machine appliqued.   The border consists of two thin strips (an inner black and then the print) and a larger black.

I machine quilted the piece.  Here is a  close view of the yellow flower which was fussy cut from a wonderful Batik.

Here is the back before I sewed on the label but after sewing on the sleeve for hanging.  The quilt measures 17.5 in X 19.5 in.

Shadowfold Play I Quilt

The center motif of this small art quilt is an exercise in using the techniques from the book Shadowfolds by Jeffrey Rutzky and Chris Palmer.  The book is full of interesting was to make geometric designs by creating folds in fabric.

Using border fabric I added a mitered border.  The border is machine quilted.  I used the beads to quilt the center motif which was made using white fabric.  There is a layer of blue-green fabric between the quilt and the batting so the folds show more.  The quilt measures 9.5 in square.

The back is a lovely gold fabric with triangles for ease of hanging.  A bamboo skewer is used along with a picture hanging hook.

Redwork Quilt

I made this quilt for the Alliance for American Quilts 2011 contest.  I just made the deadline which was March 7, 2011.  I almost didn’t make one this year as I was busy with the commissioned 1790 eagle quilt and then a few baby quilts.

The theme this year is:  “Alliances: People, Patterns, Passion,” a broad theme that celebrates cooperative relationships that work towards a common goal.

I knew I didn’t have time to piece and then quilt one.  I remembered this fabric with the scene involving people working together so I decided to do a “whole cloth” quilt and machine quilt it.

The quilt is 16 inches square.

I love these pigs.  Not sure why one is wearing what looks like a yoke.
I carefully worked around the fence slats and the window detail.

The first year I made a  crazy quilt and last year one I called “Label Me.”

Pale Flowers Quilt

Recently I received this quilt from Susan as part of the ALQS5.  It is lovely!   It is 8.25 in X 10.75 in.

Winter

This small art quilt was inspired by Movin Meat’s post:  Fearful Symmetry.  I took the EKG (photo credit), printed it out, enlarged a small segment and used it for the quilt. 

The quilt was made as part of the ALQS5.  It is meant to be an art quilt.  The spikes of the EKG made me think of stalactites and stalagmites, of winter and cold.  I had a fat quarter of a gray blue fabric with trees which I used for the background.  I used a blue batik for the foreground. 

It is machine appliqued and quilted using a multicolor metallic thread.  It is 8.5 in X 10.5 in.

Winking Santa

I recently finished this miniature Christmas quilt.  The Santa comes from a Christmas card from years past which I saved with the intention to someday use it in quilting.  The Santa is machine appliqued using mostly cotton fabrics, but I did use scraps of white ultra suede for the hat trim and black ultra suede for the eyelashes. 

I added glitter glue to the hat trim for a little “flash.”  The white on white fabric used for the bread helped keep it from looking too flat. 
The quilt is machine quilted.  It measures 11 in X 13.5 in.  I sewed a sleeve on the back for hanging.    

Abstract Art Mini-Quilt

The inspiration for this miniature quilt came from feedly. When there is no photo in the blog post, feedly will use stock photos. I liked this abstract one and “saved” it on my posterous blog.  I enlarged the small feedly photo and printed it out. I then used freezer paper to make my pattern pieces.

I hand sewed the pieces together.

I used the back fabric to self-bind the quilt, creating a mitered border. The miniature quilt is 13 in X 9.75 in. It is hand quilted.
The back has a 4 in sleeve sewn for hanging the quilt.
