Christmas Tree Skirt

Updated 3/2017-- all links (except to my own posts) removed as many no longer active. and it was easier than checking each one.

I made this Christmas Tree Skirt back in the mid 1990’s, but have used it only once. After I invited the dogs into my life, Christmas trees have pretty much gone out. Their tails are not tree friendly. So I decorate with Poinsettias, wreaths, etc.
The skirt is features red, green, and yellow 8-point stars on a black background. The star blocks are 16 in square. It is machine pieced and quilted. It closes with snaps. The skirt is 30 in from center to outer point.
I’ll be adding this post to SewCalGal’s Virtual Christmas Quilt Show.  I hope you will check it out as I am sure there will be many lovely quilts.
Here is a close shot of one of the star blocks.

I love the skirt - my mother made me one many years ago and even though the colors aren't particularly "Christmasy" it's a treasure to me. I'm partial to stars though so yours really appeals to me. I just ordered a kit for a wool tree skirt and I'm anxious to get it. blessings, marlene

Thank you, Marlene. I look forward to seeing the finished wool tree skirt. Would also love to see the one your mother made for you.

You always make me want to know how to quilt. I never think twice about quilting until I come to your blog, and then I have a sudden and inexplicable *need* to quilt. My mom quilted, and my grandma, and many of my cousins and quite a few of my friends too! But I never really feel a need until I come and see the beautiful work you do. And I've always wanted to want to quilt, yaknow? Maybe it's time I try it! Anywho, awesome tree skirt, Ramona! All we use on our christmas tree is an old bedsheet or an old tablecloth. It's colorful, and gets the job done, but I think it'd be sweet to have a real tree skirt.

That's so pretty, Ramona.

I know what you mean about the tree. My little 8 month old lab thinks the tree is a toy factory made just for him. People will wonder why there are only decorations on 3/4 of the tree. :)

Beautiful! How can you part with it?

Oh Ramona! Absolutely beautiful!

I know what you mean about the tails. :)

And in our house (close quarters) everyone has to walk past the tree ..including the animals, to get to the next room.

I know that every year there will be collateral damage ..no matter what i do ..between both cats and dog. So..I put the good nonbreakable ornaments in that area, fasten tightly...but because I have to see shiny Christmas balls..I do go out and buy the cheap ones. Also have a velvet tree quilt underneath that catches some ..but if hit tile ..it's hx.

And the door is nearby and you know how excited they get for their walks. So we downplay going out and nonchalantly put the leash on. :)

One year for no reason..our cat came out of nowhere and batted HARD in succession at the balls, smashed them and ran. He SCARED me cause I didn't expect it and actually was very funny. Not the clean up though. :)

I always say this Ramona..but I just don't know how you get all these quilts made with all the other things you have to do.

Everything is so beautiful. :)

This is so beautiful and creative. Would you mind sharing what the pattern is? I have 6 blocks from an exhchange that I think would look nice around the big star. This is the first time I've visited your site and I am admiring your work! Fitting in sewing and work takes balance, thanks for the motivation!

Peggy, each star block is 16 in square. The center is a hexagon with 8 in sides (with appoximately a 6 in circle cut out after piecing and quilting). The blocks are sewn togethering using isoles triangles (16 in long sides with 8 in base). One of the iso-triangles will need to be split for the opening. Bind all the edges, use snaps or ties to close.

Such a lovely tree skirt. What a shame that you can no longer use it. I hope someone buys it on Etsy and enjoys it for years to come.

I love the Christmas Tree Skirt! We have been married for 17 years and have always put a red sheet under the tree ... this is lovely and I feel the need to make a Christmas Tree Skirt beginning to unfold.
