I posted about the first memory quilt made back at the end of May. Here is the second one I have finished. It is from the strips and has three pockets (all working pockets). This one is 50 in X 70 in. It is machine pieced and quilted. I used the Baptist Fan pattern for the quilting.
Here you can see some of the shirt labels and one of the pockets.
The fabric used for the back of this one features Route 66. The man who is being remembered with these quilts had planned to drive Route 66. He never got to take that trip.

That quilt is beautiful! I am a quilt fanatic but I don't know if I don't have the patience or what, but I just can't seem to get one made on my own. I live not far from Holmes County in Ohio, which is home to the largest Amish community in the world, I go there each year and buy handmade quilts for various people. I wish every time that I had such talent. About the most creative I have gotten was to make many memory bears using my mothers flannel nightgowns after she had passed away.
The person you made this for will cherish it forever.
I bet those bears are nice. Try making small quilts (doll-sized) to go with the bears, and try a simple pattern (4-patch, etc). You might find a hidden talent. :)

Dr. Bates, thank you for this advise. I may well try it the way you have said. I do think I try to start to big by wanting to make a BIG quilt. Making the small one to start, sounds doable even for me...:)
Ramona, Just a word to your readers.....you are so right....start SMALL. I have had so many students in classes saying they didn't know what they were doing when they started (with a king sized quilt!) and became quickly frustrated. It's a sure way to turn yourself off to quilting and that would be a shame! Love the shirt quilt and think it a wonderful memorial!!! You keep up your good work! Pat
