The Cross Fabric Postcard

I was inspired to make this postcard by the view I get of the cross of a Church I run past on one of my usual routes.  I had been thinking it would make a nice small quilt or postcard for a while now.  I finally sat down and did the postcard on Easter Sunday afternoon.   Here is the view that inspired the postcard.

Here's the finished postcard.  It measures 6 in x 8 in.

More Fabric Postcards

I actually made these back in August.  This first one is 6 in x 8.25 in, made using selvage edges for the heart.  I gave it to a friend who saw it and asked if it was spoken for.

This one measures approx 4.5 in x 8.7 in.  It will be mailed to another friend.

This one measures approx 5.25 in X 7.25 in.  I have a couple of folks in mind to send this one to.

Trapunto Fabric Postcard

This fabric postcard is made using a whole cloth quilting with trapunto to give the lizard an added dimensional effect.  I machine quilted around the lizard.
I then added yarn (wool/acrylic) for the trapunto.
The yarn was then trimmed prior to adding the pelon stabilizer, triangles for hanging, and binding.
Here is the finished postcard, 5 in X 6.5 in.

Three Small Pieces

These small (5 in square pieces were done prior to last week's featured piece after I heard about the call for 5x5 art pieces.  The first two are 5 in square quilts and the third is a 5 in square quilted postcard. This first one was made using a scrap piece of fabric reminiscent of the 60s/70s.  I machine quilted pink, green, and yellow pieces then machine quilted it.
This one is machine appliqued and quilted also.  It was inspired by swimming near dawn in the open pool at my local athletic club while practicing my back stroke.
This one has the stiff Pelon stabilizer that makes it a postcard.  It is inspired by love of Matisse art work.  In this case the Blue Nude though mine is done as a pink nude on blue background.  It is machine appliqued and quilted.
All of the pieces have small triangle pieces on the back to allow easy hanging if desired.

Five She Persisted Fabric Postcards

It feels appropriate to share these at this time.  After all March is women's history month and earlier this week was International Woman's Day.  These five quilted postcards honor women who persisted.

Harriet Tubman is a perfect example of a woman who persisted in the face of multiple difficulties.  A wonderful example of a civil rights activist. Finished size is 6.5 in X 8 in.
Marie Curie, persisted in her pursuit to be educated in a male dominated science field, was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize.  The quilted postcard is 8.5 in X 10.5 in.
Susan B. Anthony persisted in the struggle for women's rights including the right to vote.  We must persist as she did to gain equal pay, equal rights to education/work/etc.  The quilted postcard is 8 in X 8.75 in.
Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman in America to become a physician.  As your quote shows, she had to persist in her struggle to do so. the struggles I had in medical school I am sure pale in comparison.  The quilted postcard is 7.5 in X 10 in.
Gertrude Elion was a chemist.  The postcard features a statement by Ms Elion:  "Don't be afraid of hard work.  Nothing worthwhile comes easily.  Don't let others discourage you or tell you that you can't do it.  In my day I was told women didn't go into chemistry.  I saw no reason why we couldn't."  The postcard is 7.5 X 9 in.

She Persisted Quilted Postcard

The current political climate has inspired me to make several quilted postcards.  The first one I made was this one.  It features the Stature of Liberty with the American flag as the background with the words "nevertheless she persisted" written on it.  It measures 6 in X 8 in.
My hope is that my country will not just persist but that my fellow countrymen/women (including myself) will somehow work together to make our country a better place.  Welcoming immigrants (because we all are immigrants or descendants of immigrants).  Improving healthcare coverage.  Making sure those with preexisting conditions can obtain affordable insurance coverage. Reining in healthcare and prescription medication costs.  Ensuring eligible voters have no barriers to prevent them from exercising their right to vote.  Improving education.  Making higher education and vocational job training is affordable.  Improving safety in all facets of life -- decreasing domestic violence, decreasing sexual assaults, decreasing violent crimes, decreasing accidental and purposeful gun deaths/injuries, decreasing suicides.  Making sure we have good air and water.

Five Fabric Postcards

I made these fabric postcards a few weeks ago.  They were made specifically to be donated to the Pet Postcard Project.  Each postcard is 5 in X 7 in.  For this first one, I fussy cut the dogs which were then machine appliqued onto the flag.  I then machine quilted the flag before assembling the postcard and binding.
This one features a fussy cut cow wearing a Christmas wreath which is machine appliqued onto the background fabric.  As with the first, it was machine quilted before assembling and binding.
This one is pieced, then machine quilted before assembling and binding.
For this one I machine appliqued a fussy cut elephant, then machine quilted before assembling and binding.
This one and the flag with the dogs are my favorites.  The fussy cut girl, dog, and grass are machine appliqued to the white background.  It was then machine quilted before assembling and binding.

Two Hand Fabric Postcards

These two small postcards are approx 5 in x 7 in.   I printed both photos (found on the internet) onto fabric and then machine quilted the cards. The first one features a hand holding a Rubik's cube. I made it as a birthday card for an old friend/mentor who turns 70 later this month.

The second one features two individuals holding hands.  It is going to a different old friend and mentor.

Two Fabric Postcards

These two fabric postcards are birthday themed. Both are machine appliqued and quilted. The first one features a n ice cream cone with a cherry on top.  It measures approx 5 in x 8 in.
This photo hopefully shows the added sparkle (using glitter glue) to the cherry and to lesser extent the ice cream.
The second card features a cup cake with single lit candle.

More Fabric Postcards

Here are more fabric postcards done this summer.  This first one features an "orphan" rushed rose which didn't make it into a quilt.  It measures 5 in x 7 in.  I mailed it to my roommate from college.

This one might have been improved using the shading techniques learned at the Drapplique workshop, but it works well as a redwork piece.  It measures 5 in x 7.5 in.  I mailed it to a longtime friend for her birthday.

This one definitely could have been better using the techniques from the Drapplique workshop.  I may have to try another version of it.  It measure 7.5 in x 6 in.  I may mail it to someone as a Halloween card.

Christmas in July Postcards

Still on the fabric postcard bend.  I've been watching the Hallmark Channel Christmas in July movies which inspired me to do a couple of Christmas postcards. The fabric is from a Debbie Mumm series several years ago.  I simple cut out the rectangles of the Santas, machine quilted them, and then did the binding.  The one on the left with the green binding measures 4 3/4 in X 5 7/8 in.  The other one measures 4 3/8 in X 5 1/2 in.

Fabric Postcards

I've been making fabric postcards lately.  This first one is a flag quilt, inspired by July 4th but also good for any day of the year here in America.  It is machine piece and quilted with iron-on beads for stars.  It measures 8 in X 5 in.

This second one is a sailboat on a lovely summer day.  I inked in a bird in the sky. Both machine piecing and applique is used.  It too is machine quilted.  It measures 6.5 in X 4.5 in.

More Fabric Postcards

This summer I seem to have been on a fabric postcard making spree.  Here are several more I have made.

This one I call “Girl with Basket of Pinwheel.”  It is 4.5 in X 5.5 in.

This one I simply call “Flowers.”  It is 3.5 in X 5 in.
This one I can’t decide on a name.  I want to call it either “Don’t Look Back” or “Are You Coming?”   It is 5 in X 7 in.

This one I call “Home Sweet Home.”  I mailed it to a friend who recently moved cross country to a new home.  I hand embroidered flowers on the fabric scene.  It is 5 in X 7 in.
This one I call “Let’s Ride.”  It is 5 in X 7 in.
This one I call “Leap Frog.”  I mailed it to @geeners who indicated that she loved my postcards.  It is 5 in X 7 in.
Here is the back of “Leap Frog.”  Most are just a simple plain back.
This one I simply call “Friends.”  It is 5 in X 7 in.
This one I call “Make a Wish.”  I hand sewed beads/sequins onto the cupcake and flame.  It is 5 in X 7 in.
This one is a simple fabric background with a ruched rose hand sewn onto to it.  I call it “Single Rose” and mailed it as a birthday card to a teacher from high school, Mrs. Bronnie Rose.
