This quilt is made from antique quilt blocks found at an estate sale in the mid-1990s. The pattern is the male version of Sun Bonnet Sue and is called Overall Sam. Five of the six blocks have a red handkerchief in the Sam’s back right pocket. I put the blocks together and then had a friend hand quilt it for me using Baptist Fan quilting. The blocks are 14” square. The quilt is 35.5” X 53.5”.
Here are close photos of two of the blocks.
Too too cute! But I'm fascinated to know why Sam only has hankies in 5 pockets? Did you do that on purpose or is it because the fabric was thus?
ReplyDeleteJabulani, that's how I the blocks were when I bought them. I decided not to add a hankie to the 6th one.
ReplyDeleteThis is the cutest one yet. Is there a story behind Sam?
ReplyDeleteNot one I know, but Pickledish (home of Kansas City Quilts) posted this not too long ago.
ReplyDeleteAs usual, beautiful
ReplyDeleteI like your passion for something outside of medicine! How do you find the time??? Hope you have a good weekend!
ReplyDeleteI love finding old quilt blocks and putting them together. One of my prettiest quilts I got that way. I can just imagine the woman who worked on them and then put them aside, or got too old to finish them. I like to think of part of her being passed on to other generations. blessings, marlene
