Perhaps some of the descriptions were a little disturbing for me, especially considering what we know now about about circumcision is not medically necessary (with the exception of the HIV studies, which I also believe hold zero weight).

I found it interesting how such care was to be given to ensure the dressing did not become soaked with urine. Yet, this seems to be the opposite of what occurs with a small child wearing a diaper.. it seems unavoidable that not just urine, but also fecal matter will no doubt get on the wound.

As a plastic surgeon, you must deal with a lot of situations that most people never do. I do hope that you will consider not supporting infant circumcision in the future, as I feel it without question violates the right of an individual.

I KNOW the foreskin to be healthy, sensitive, functional genital tissue - and so I feel very strongly that I need to try to stop people from taking that part away from someone who does not get a say in the procedure. I hope, if you do not feel that way already, that you will give this position of thought great consideration.

Thanks again for posting this information, it was very interesting to consider the current medical understanding from 101 years ago.Joelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17167995922085558977noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7675087351939177300.post-82773027348592451422009-10-05T17:49:10.906-05:002009-10-05T17:49:10.906-05:00Caroline, my intention with this post was to simpl...Caroline, my intention with this post was to simply present some of the surgical history of the procedure.rlbateshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15236331355857884458noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7675087351939177300.post-71991403044083309652009-10-05T16:53:21.417-05:002009-10-05T16:53:21.417-05:00Hi Dr. Bates,

Many people have a difficult time discussing circumcision, and there is a lot of misinformation out there. Thanks for sharing some of the gruesome, (but true), history of this surgery. And thank you for being a physician who is "out" about your opposition to the procedure being performed on non-consenting individuals.

We need more like you!

If you're interested, you can see other doctors like yourself discuss the topic

Doctors Opposing Circumcision
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=BC354EC34E141BD3

Facing Circumcision: Eight Physicians Tell Their Stories
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CC9Y-Us210

doctorsopposingcircumcision.orgCarolinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13466844710657574885noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7675087351939177300.post-59781026087433503822009-10-05T09:14:33.735-05:002009-10-05T09:14:33.735-05:00Circumcision was originally done in America to sto...Circumcision was originally done in America to stop masturbation which would result in blindness, epilepsy, paralysis, or mental retardation. Ever since it was proven masturbation did not cause these problems, the medical community has been searching for a reason to perform this surgery. Every single time one reason is disproven they invent another one. That is the real historical viewpoint.calicehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11822092543408072184noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7675087351939177300.post-87318573350008690642009-10-05T08:14:17.233-05:002009-10-05T08:14:17.233-05:00Hmmm:

Eg in Malawi, the HIV rate is 13.2% among circumcised men, but only 9.5% among intact men. In Rwanda, the HIV rate is 3.5% among circumcised men, but only 2.1% among intact men. If circumcision really worked against AIDS, this just wouldn't happen. We now have people calling circumcision a "vaccine" or "invisible condom", and viewing circumcision as an alternative to condoms.

The one study into male-to-female transmission showed a 50% higher rate in the group where the men had been circumcised btw.

ABC (Abstinence, Being faithful, Condoms) is the way forward. Promoting genital surgery will cost African lives, not save them.Mark Lyndonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08781475927979224765noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7675087351939177300.post-10857663663795798432009-10-05T08:11:07.251-05:002009-10-05T08:11:07.251-05:00It is completely insane and inappropriate for pare...It is completely insane and inappropriate for parents to remove a normal, healthy, sensitive and functional part of a boy's penis out of fear of what a child may choose to do, sexually, in 15 or 20 years.Fletchnoreply@blogger.com
